    Get PDF
Falls among elderly can pose serious consequences such as injury or even fatal ones. Therefore, it is essential that fall are detected early and away to that is by using IoT platform. The authors have been developing a wearable device for elderly monitoring system utilizing accelerometer. The data from accelerometer is connected to an Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform called ThingSpeakTM. Based on IoT platform, elderly patients can be remotely monitored as long as the care providers have good internet access. The paper presents the experimental results of determining the sensitivity and specificity of the accelerometer used in the proposed system. This is the first step for developing an accurate data acquisition for monitoring purposes. Based on the experimental results, the average percentage for sensitivity obtained for this device is 73.3%, while the average for specificity obtained is 89.3%. Both sensitivity and specificity tests shows promising results which indicates that the device only has a fail rate of 26.7% and error rate of 10.7%

    Get PDF
Conventional chemopreventive agents causes adverse side effects in cancer patients. Thus, this study focuses on the effects of natural plant extract against cancer cell as a way to reduce or detrimental effects of orthodox drugs. The present study emphasizes on anti-cancer potentiality of Artocarpus altilis fruit extract against cervical cancer cell. Cervical cancer cell treated with methanol extract of artocarpus altilis fruit with the concentration varied from 10μg/ml, 20μg/ml, 30μg/ml, 40μg/ml and 50μg/ml. Treated and untreated (cells without treatment) cell proliferation and half maximal inhibitory concentration IC50 measured after 72 hours of incubation. Cells without treatment, 10μg/ml, 20μg/ml, 30μg/ml, 40μg/ml and 50 μg/ml of extract concentration showed 1.3, 0.98, 0.72, 0.65, 0.51, and 0.3 of cell proliferation factor accordingly with 40μg/ml of IC50 value. The result shows that artocarpus altilis is capable in opposing cervical cancer cell proliferation or growth as the proliferation factor decreases with the increasing dose of extract concentration which can be attributed to the presence of bioactive compound in Artocarpus altilis

IoT Based Virtual Reality Game for Physio-therapeutic Patients

    Get PDF
Biofeedback therapy trains the patient to control voluntarily the involuntary process of their body. This non-invasive and non-drug treatment is also used as a means to rehabilitate the physical impairments that may follow a stroke, a traumatic brain injury or even in neurological aspects within occupational therapy. The idea behind this study is based on using immersive gaming as a tool for physical rehabilitation that combines the idea of biofeedback and physical computing to get a patient emotionally involved in a game that requires them to do the exercises in order to interact with the game. This game is aimed towards addressing the basic treatment for ‘Frozen Shoulder’. In this work, the physical motions are captured by the wearable ultrasonic sensor attached temporarily to the various limbs of the patient. The data received from the sensors are then sent to the game via serial wireless communication. There are two main aspects to this study: motion capturing and game design. The current status of the application is a single ultrasonic detector. The experimental result shows that physio-therapeutic patients are benefited through the IoT based virtual reality game

    Get PDF
This study suggests that natural sources may become an important tool in treating cancer. Neolamarckia cadamba (NC) leaves also well-known as “Anthocephalus Cadamba”, is a precious plant in Ayurvedic medicine. HeLa cells are one of the examples of eukaryotic cells type. It is derived from human cervical cancer cells. This experiment is conducted in different concentrations of NC Leaves (1μg/ml, 5μg/ml, 10μg/ml, 20μg/ml, 30μg/ml, 40μg/ml, 50μg/ml, 60μg/ml, 70μg/ml, 80μg/ml, 90μg/ml and 100μg/ml) for 48 hours. This experiment’s result proves that the anti-cancer properties of the extract of NC leaves are by increasing the concentration of extract, the numbers of cell viability will decrease. For contribution, the process of NC leaves extract will be combined with the electroporation process to investigate the effect on HeLa cell. Electroporation parameters used for this study were (voltage 600v/cm, pulse duration 5ms, single pulse)

Congestion control for named data networking-based wireless ad hoc network

    Get PDF
There is lack of complete congestion control solution that is optimized or practical with the Named Data Networking (NDN)-based MANET environment. All the existing suggested solutions are either for general NDN which is not optimized for MANET environment or congestion control solution for incomplete NDN-based MANET. Therefore, we recommend a complete congestion control solution specifically for NDN-based MANET which we call Standbyme Congestion Control or simply called Standbyme. Standbyme design optimized for NDN-based MANET needs in reducing network congestion’s bad effect such as goodput reduction, increment of number of packet loss or increment of delay in NDN-based MANET. Through the testbed experiment, we did by comparing Standbyme with other congestion control methods we selected for comparison, i.e., a practical congestion control for NDN (PCON) congestion control and best effort link reliability protocol (BELRP) congestion control, indicating Standbyme was able to drastically reduce network congestion in NDN-based MANET. Without sacrificing the performance of NDN-based MANET, Standbyme has also reduced bad effect of network congestion through better approach of congestion prevention and reduction in MANET environment

GSM-based notification system and location tagging using GPS for smart recycle bin

    Get PDF
This paper describe the design and development of a system to detect the level of recyclable waste in a smart recycle bin and then send notification signals including the locations coordinate to assist the authority to collect and empty the bin. At present, the current system does not provide a notification system mechanism to inform the waste authority that the recycle bin is full and need to be collected. Therefore, an automatic notification system is proposed as to reduce and optimize the collection time. This could also assist the waste collector to re-schedule the collection time and place depending on the regularity of the signal received. This could also reduce the manual collection process which require time and cost of labor. The development of the system involved the use of GSM module to enable the SMS text notification system and some software to manage all the notification received from the bin

Development of a new single-phase field excitation flux switching motor topology with segmental rotor

    Get PDF
Diverse topology of three-phase and single-phase Field Excitation Flux Switching Machines (FEFSMs) that have been developed recently have several advantages such as variable flux capability and the single piece structure of rotor suitable for high-speed applications. However, a salient rotor structure has led to a longer flux path resulting in high flux leakage and higher rotor weight. Meanwhile, overlap windings between armature and Field Excitation Coil (FEC) have caused the problems of high end coil increased size of motor and high copper losses. Therefore, a new topology of singlephase non-overlap windings 12S-6P FEFSM segmented rotor with the advantages of less weight and non-overlap between armature coil and FEC windings is presented. The design, flux linkage, back-EMF, cogging torque, average torque, speed, and power of this new topology are investigated by JMAG-Designer via a 2D-FEA. As a results the proposed motor has achieved torque and power of 0.91Nm and 293W, respectively. To prove the simulation result based on 2D-FEA, experimental test is performed and the armature back-EMF was observed with FE current of 4A is supplied. Finally, at the speed of 500 rpm and 3000 rpm, the back-EMF is 2.75 V and 16.13 V, respectively. The simulation results showed reasonable agreement with the experimental results, approximately difference range from 4.9% to 7.4%

Modelling Electrical Resistance Tomography Using COMSOL and Matlab for Crack Detection Analysis

    Get PDF
Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is designed for prediction on electrode polarization, potential drop near current supply and electrode that proximate to phantom, electrode size, width, and length. ERT is felicitous to be utilized for an experiment on material that is conductive like concrete. The objective of this study is to model ERT sensor in two-dimension by utilizing COMSOL Multiphysics software. The study uses opposite method of electrode excitation for the analyses of the output voltage in the presence of air holes detection. The result of the electric field from the COMSOL is used further in the Matlab to reconstruct the image in the form of 64x64 pixels using Linear Back Projection (LBP) algorithm. ERT model is tested with the presence of one air hole or more. The same goes to the output voltage whenever the air holes are incremented. In conclusion, the opposite electrodes activation is suitable method to be considered because it produces the linear relation between the output voltage and the air holes

    Sabah Traditional Chinese Medicine Database

    Get PDF
As technology grows, people tend to use or apply anything digitalized instead of printed, especially for references. This is because the printed form references are not easy to find. Even if the references are found successfully, it has already cost a lot of time, money, energy, etc. At the same time, people also put more emphasize on health issues. They are beginning to be more alert in fields that they have ignored before, such as traditional medicine and Chinese medicine. Based on these two points, it can be said that the effort of transforming Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from printed based reference into online reference as a database is a public beneficial effort. There are a lot of online TCM database outside of Malaysia, especially from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Those herbal remedies from overseas are somewhat different from the herbal remedies in Malaysia due to the habits and occurrences of the herbs. Through this project, it is hoped that this database will help the local people to discover and identify the herbs that they could find in the surrounding area. The objectives of this project are to identify the validity of the information of the Sabah TCM using mixed method, to develop the Sabah TCM database, and finally to evaluate the usability of the database designed using meCUE. The methodology used was 4D Appreciative Inquiry Model, which included discovery, dream, design, and destiny phases. The advantage of this model was to take a positive core to make any changes instead of finding the weaknesses of the project. Hopefully through the developed database, local Sabahan can take the advantage in identifying the proper usage of existing herbs in their surroundings
